PCT 8

Criteria:

Demonstrate in practice their knowledge and understanding of how ākonga learn

Key Indicators:

i. Enable ākonga to make connections between their prior experiences and learning and their current learning activities.

The activities provided in Reading, Writing and Maths all relate to the students ability level and link to their focuses whether it may be simple addition problems using equipment or their letter names and sounds.

ii. Provide opportunities and support for ākonga to engage with, practise and apply new learning to different contexts

In Explore we record the new vocabulary that we teach that relates to the topic. This vocab will often resurface during different topics allowing the kids to recognize it and often use it without assistance. We have introduced new tasks and challenges in Maths and Reading that relate to their prior learning but are provided in different ways such as a physical task or a creative task.

iii. Encourage ākonga to take responsibility for their own learning and behaviour

We utilise a system which focuses on the students being competent self-managers. We have a chart on the wall which records the students progress as the teachers notice how they manage themselves during the school day. As they progress they reach different milestones which is the silver badge and gold badge. These badges allows the wearers to have do extra activities such as using the Bee-Bots. As this is not a system based on just rewarding the students but a reflection on how they handle themselves in the classroom, students are able to move their pins back which means they need to ensure they are constantly managing themselves well.

iv. Assist ākonga to think critically about information and ideas and to reflect on the learning

In Explore we ask open ended questions to get the students to think about what they are doing and how they could further it rather then providing the answer. We also provide materials that don't just have one purpose, so students can experiment with it in a way they feel comfortable and interested in.
